The term “sport utility vehicle” implies that drivers will get a variety of uses out of their rides, but a more rugged transport option can sometimes translate to more vehicle issues. That does not appear to be the case for the 2014 GMC Terrain and Yukon, however, as both SUVs recently topped their respective segments in the J.D. Power 2014 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS).

Surveying more than 86,000 owners and lessees of 2014-model-year vehicles after they had spent 90 days with their rides, J.D. Power analyzed several potential vehicle problem areas using a 233-question battery. Segment winners in the 2014 IQS were the models that experienced the fewest problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). While the GMC Terrain led the Compact SUV segment with the lowest PP100 score, the GMC Yukon tied the Chevrolet Suburban from its sister brand atop the Large SUV segment.

“The GMC Terrain and Yukon have durable designs that can take you and your family pretty much anywhere while keeping you away from the repair shop,” said Robert Lefrancois, general sales manager of Mastria Buick GMC Cadillac, a Massachusetts GMC dealer. “Both SUVs also surpass buyer expectations in their segments, with the Terrain offering a surprising amount of interior space for its compact size and the Yukon returning impressive fuel efficiency despite its larger footprint and powerful V8 engines.”

Last month, the GMC Terrain and Yukon continued to attract new buyers with their dependability, versatility and efficient performance. Retail sales of the Terrain rose by 9 percent year-over-year, helping the SUV reach an overall June record. Meanwhile, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL saw an impressive 83 percent retail sales increase compared to June 2013. Boosted by a full redesign for the 2015 model year, the Yukon and Yukon XL now feature more powerful and more efficient EcoTec3 V8 engines, a quieter interior, new fold-flat rear seats and the next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system with a standard eight-inch color touchscreen.
