Hyundai Leads All Non-Premium Brands in 2014 J.D. Power APEAL Study

08/20/2014 (press release: CambridgePRGroup) // MANCHESTER, N.H. // AutoFair Hyundai

Just one month after naming Hyundai the top non-premium brand in its Initial Quality Study (IQS), J.D. Power has given the automaker another top billing, this time in its annual Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The announcement late last month marked the first time a non-premium nameplate has ranked highest in both J.D. Power studies in the same year. Within individual vehicle segments of the 2014 APEAL Study, the 2014 Hyundai Accent earned highest honors in the Small Car category, while the 2014 Hyundai Veloster and Sonata finished second and third in their segments, respectively.

J.D. Power’s IQS and APEAL Study each evaluate different vehicle attributes that factor into a car buyer’s decision. The IQS examines the number of problems experienced by new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership, while the APEAL Study ranks cars based on owner assessments of design, performance, content and layout during that same time period. Aided by three of its vehicles placing within the top three of their segments in 2014, Hyundai achieved its highest overall finish in the APEAL Study’s 19-year history, beating out other highly ranked non-premium brands like Ram, Volkswagen and MINI.

“Hyundai is constantly seeking out new ways to improve its vehicles, whether that means more efficient engines, sleeker body styles or more reliable materials and designs,” said Drew Hill, general manager of AutoFair Hyundai, a New Hampshire Hyundai dealer in Manchester. “We expect that future J.D. Power studies will reflect even more favorably on Hyundai because the 2015 model year brought redesigns of the Sonata and Genesis, which are perfect examples of the brand’s smart engineering.”

Car shoppers appear to be noticing Hyundai’s recent improvements too, as the automaker recorded its best-ever July sales last month. Hyundai sold 67,011 units in July, up 2 percent from the same month last year. Boosted by its recent redesign, the Sonata midsize sedan saw a 19 percent sales increase, while the Santa Fe compact SUV topped its July 2013 total by 26 percent. Hyundai’s premium models also attracted year-over-year growth, with July sales of the Genesis and Equus rising by 5 percent and 76 percent, respectively.
