Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is primarily known for the important role it plays in blood clotting: however, vitamin K is also absolutely essential to building strong bones, preventing heart disease, and plays a crucial part of other bodily processes. Despite these known benefits, vitamin K is sometimes referred to as “the forgotten vitamin” because its major benefits are often overlooked. Recent studies suggest vitamin K is an important adjunct to vitamin D, so if one of these vitamins is present as a deficit, then neither vitamin works optimally in the body.
“Vitamin K has been called the next vitamin D, which has been one of the most widely run assays on LC-MS/MS equipment in the clinical diagnostics market. Vitamin K has been found to play a role in coagulation, tissue calcification and regulation of cellular functions. Vitamin K deficiency has been linked to adults taking vitamin K antagonists and infants who are exclusively breast fed. Adults taking sufficient vitamin K1 (daily intake of 120µg for males and 90µg for females) had a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease.
