MI6 leader Richard Moore says Beijing and Moscow are “pouring money” on technological advances that will reshape espionage and geopolitics.
The head of the UK’s foreign intelligence service has warned that China and Russia are running to dominate artificial intelligence in a way that could overturn geopolitics over the next 10 years.
Spies around the world are trying to counter the seismic advances in technology that are challenging traditional human-led espionage operations that have dominated espionage for thousands of years.
Richard Moore, head of the Secret Intelligence Service known as MI6, said that quantum engineering, engineering biology, a wealth of data, and advances in computer power were a threat to the West.
“Our rivals are pouring money and ambition into mastering artificial intelligence, quantum computing and synthetic biology because they know that mastering these technologies will give them strength,” Moore, who rarely gives public speeches, said on Tuesday, according to Reuters news. agency.
Moore, a former diplomat who became MI6 leader in 2020, said the technological advancement of the next decade could surpass all the technological advances of the last century.
“As a society, we have not yet internalized this tragic event and the impact it can have on global geopolitics. But it’s a white spotlight for MI6, ”he said.
Of particular concern to spies in the world’s liberal democracies are the intelligence agencies of Russia and China, which are in a hurry to harness the power of a range of sophisticated technologies, sometimes at a faster pace than in the West.
Western intelligence agencies fear that Beijing will dominate all the key emerging technologies over the decade, especially artificial intelligence, synthetic biology and genetics.
China’s economic and military rise over the past 40 years is considered one of the most significant geopolitical events of recent times, along with the fall of the Soviet Union that ended the Cold War in 1991.
MI6, portrayed by novelists as the employer of John le Carré’s George Smiley and Ian Fleming’s James Bond’s most memorable fictional spies, operates abroad and is committed to defending the UK and its interests.
Moore said the service would have to be changed to use new technologies.
“We can’t expect the tech world to repeat the industry, so we need to take advantage of it,” he says.
