Amazon Web Services has launched a new cloud-based data service that can help automakers remotely diagnose problems with their vehicles, improve recall and security, as well as manage related data, the company told Reuters.

AWS IoT FleetWise, the company’s brand new portfolio of products and services for the AWS for Automotive transportation industry, will unveil on Tuesday at Amazon.com’s annual re: Invent conference in Las Vegas.

FleetWise allows customers, automakers, and transportation providers like Lyft and Uber to collect, organize, and transfer vehicle data to the cloud while standardizing different data formats to facilitate data analysis, said Mike Tzamaloukas of AWS Automotive according to the general manager.

“As vehicles become smarter and more advanced, the amount of data produced by vehicles equipped with cameras, lenses and radars is growing exponentially,” Tzamaloukas said in an interview. FleetWise was developed for customers to “easily access data that is broken down into different fleet models and vehicle types,” he added.

FleetWise was also designed to complement data-driven services offered by automakers, including General Motors Co.’s OnStar and Ford Motor Co.’s Ford Pro Intelligence, he said.

Increasing change

The new service combines a wide range of in-vehicle and cloud vehicles with AWS for Automotive and 185 business partners, according to Dean Phillips, the unit’s technology leader worldwide.

The AWS portfolio includes cloud-based computing, data storage, analytics, and application development.

While Amazon isn’t breaking down the value of its automotive cloud services business, the company’s AWS unit continues to grow.

In 2020, AWS earned $ 13.5 billion in sales of $ 45.4 billion, 47 percent and 30 percent more than the previous year. During the first nine months of 2021, despite ongoing pandemics and global supply chain disruptions, AWS’s growth was even stronger: $ 13.2 billion in operating profits and $ 44.4 billion in sales, almost on par with full-year 2020 results.

According to the Synergy Research Group, more than 60 percent of the $ 45 billion in business cloud service spending in the third quarter went to three large technology companies: Alphabet Inc.’s Google, with 10 percent; Microsoft, with 20 percent; and AWS with 33 percent.
