Raj Angad Bawa has not seen his grandfather, Tarlochan Singh Bawa, with a hockey stick. Legend played a key role in helping India win the gold medal at the 1948 London Olympics.
And growing up, these stories prompted Raj to wear the Indian jersey, albeit cricket.
On Friday, the Indian Cricket Control Committee appointed the full batsman of the Indian Under-19 national team for the Asian Cup, along with his friend Harnoor Singh Pannu – another talented Chandigarh batsman.
A fast-paced midfielder and left-wing attacker, Raj fell in love with the sport quite early as he traveled with his father Sukhwinder Singh Baware, coach of Yuvraj Singh. “My dad coached a lot of teams in the state, and I used to travel with him and spend my time playing cricket. I slowly got hooked on the game and eventually took it seriously, ”Raj Angad said Sportsstar.

A few years ago, the family moved from Gurugram to Chandigarh, where Raj entered the prestigious DAV Public School and soon played regularly in age groups. “When Chandighar gained BCCI affiliation a couple of years ago, I switched from PCA to UTCA and have been representing the team ever since.”
He knows there will be hopes, but that doesn’t stop him from making his mark. “I was very young when my grandfather passed away in 2008. But yes, it is a great honor to carry on the legacy. Since my father is a coach, I have learned a lot from him. This has definitely helped me in my career, ”said Raj, who is currently a student at GGSD College in Chandigarh.
Although he has only met Yuvraj a couple of times, he idolizes the former Indian cricketer. In the U-19 Challenger Trophy, he ran 154 – including a century – and won eight wickets. “I am not thinking too much about next year’s Under-19 World Cup. At the moment, the focus is on playing well in the Asian Cup, ”said the youngster.
Harnoor – pacer batter
It’s a similar story to Harnoor. His grandfather Rajinder Singh took part in the Punjab game, and his father Birinder Singh represented the state at the U-19 level.
Harnoor was the top scorer in the Challenger Trophy, scoring 412 runs in his kitten. He also took part in the recently concluded U-19 Tri-Series in Kolkata.

“At first, I didn’t feel like cricket, but then my grandfather introduced me to the game, and I slowly developed a passion for it. That’s how it started, ”said Harnoor, an 18-year-old.

He started the ball as fast as he could, but his grandfather’s guidance helped him focus on batting. “My grandfather told me that it’s important for a cricket fan to focus on batting as well, and that’s how I created interest,” he said.
His older brother, who is still in Canada today, played cricket under the age of 19 as a batsman, and his advice also helped Harnoor.
Harnoor, a Shubman Gill fan, won the Challengers Trophy for three centuries in a row and sealed his place in the Asia Cup. “I practiced my mindset. I knew I was in the running, so the only thing I could do was make sure I was focused and get things right, ”he said.
The two friends set off for Bengaluru on Saturday, following their dreams.
