Officials say nine children have been killed and dozens more injured in a blaze in the Bronx.

At least 19 people have been killed, including nine children, and dozens more injured in a house building fire in New York City, city officials and U.S. media have reported.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the fire, which broke out around 11 a.m. Sunday, killed 19 people in a 19-story apartment building in the Bronx.

“19 people have been confirmed dead right now, and we have several others in critical condition,” Adams said in an interview with CNN.

Nine of the dead were children, the Associated Press news agency reported, citing a city official.

More than five dozen people were injured and 13 people were still in critical condition at the hospital, said Chief Adviser to Mayor Stefan Ringel Adams.

About 200 firefighters were sent to put out the blaze. His cause was not immediately known, Daniel Nigro, the city’s fire commissioner, told reporters.

“Members found the victims on all floors of the stairs and were coming out in a heart and breathing stop,” he said.

Nigro said the smoke had spread to all floors of the building, probably because the door to the house had been left open, and the victims had suffered heavy smoke inhalation.
