Poliomyelitis workers are targeted at three locations in the city of Jalalabad – the latest series of attacks on health workers.

Four workers have been killed and three others injured in a polio vaccine in several attacks in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, a provincial health department official said in an attack on health workers.

Dr Jan Mohammad, head of the Nangarhar polio immunization unit in the main city of Jalalabad, said on Tuesday that gunmen had killed four workers and injured three others against workers at three locations in the city.

“Today is the second day of our operations after three months, but we must cancel it once again,” Mohammad told Reuters, adding that all the dead were men.

Gunners killed three women from polio vaccines in March this year in Jalalabad, which forced health workers to suspend operations and assess safety.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries in the world where polio remains endemic.

No group claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s attacks.

The Taliban, which is fighting to overthrow the foreign-backed Afghan government, has denied involvement in previous attacks.

The ISIL (ISIS) group has also claimed responsibility for several murders aimed at journalists and legal professionals who were born in the country’s civil society.

Zia ul Haq Amarkhil, governor of Nangarhar, said police are investigating the attacks.

Many conservative societies in Afghanistan oppose vaccines, with fighters frequently attacking health workers saying they are being used as a cover for espionage in the West.
