“We both like to stimulate too much in our home in the best way possible,” he says Sarah Kate Smigiel, Lives with his wife Hannah (and their three dogs) in Chestertown, Maryland. Their house is full of color, art and Sarah Kate’s breakfast. Here, it gives us an inside look and informs us of the last supreme operation …
LIVING ROOM
New start: We moved from Pittsburgh to Chestertown last April. Chestertown is inhabited by my grandparents and I live 30 minutes away. It was a place for us to start fresh, but still be close to family. We moved in early in the pandemic. Creating this house in Chestertown, decorating all that time and having it together, was cathartic.
In a cool town: We wanted a small town. Oddly enough, we also wanted to feel safe. Chestertown is this little gem. It has a cozy atmosphere, but we feel very welcome and accepted here.
Play routine: We work against schedules, but when we have free days together we stay in the living room. We play video games on an old Nintendo, which is very nostalgic for us. We are also on reality TV RuPaulen Drag Race.
On used curtains: They are our curtains Mexicali Blues, which recycles silk awards. They take the panels from sections that have not been damaged or worn out and fasten them together to make curtains.
DINING ROOM
On a successor table: This table was in my childhood home; I made crafts and crafts, every family dinner I grew up with was here. It has dirt and scratches. Parents wanted to be with our family. My mom comes to dinner once a week and sits here, and she’s fine. Even if it’s just wood, it’s important wood.
KITCHEN
To attend meals: We’re getting closer to improving on some of our favorite meals: grilled tables, tacos nights, red curry, breakfast hash. I like to try different sections of the world’s food and cuisine. But I can’t bake it at all. I can’t make box brownies. I leave that to Hannah.
When decorating a dishwasher: We found this dishwasher sticker Etsy – the best place for a weird decoration!
LOGELA
Vintage look: Our room is very 70s. A lot of people, when they see it online, it reminds me of my daughter’s teenage dream room, which is fun.
Discussion Tips: The piece of flowers on our bed was $ 2 or $ 3 at Goodwill. I once heard this quote: a room should feel crowded, not decorated. And I love that. Everything we have here comes from savings stores or travel. I tell people, if you buy things you love, let it work in a room. During the pandemic, we changed the way we deal online Facebook Marketplace and Good will. Goodwill is something online that many people don’t know about. You can buy goodwill anywhere in the country and it is shipped to your home.
On three dogs: We have five Boston terriors named Louie and Clark, as well as a rescue. They named it Maui in Moana because we knew it would be big and strong. They are all a lot of fun together. I’ve been watching and sitting all day.
Celebrating color: The interior design is so gray and beige and white. In a small act of rebellion, we tried to give as many colors as possible. It’s also a representation of the rainbow, which I find pretty nice.

In a life-changing operation: I identify as non-binary, and I use the pronouns themselves and themselves. It was a new discovery about four years ago when I began to understand that this was an opportunity. I grew up in a very strict binary genre. I also grew up as a dancer – ballet, tapa, jazz, modern, hip hop – and that world has a lot of genre. But once I graduated from college, even though I identified as a lesbian, I didn’t feel like I was ending up with who I was and how I wanted to express myself. So I started exploring an online community of non-binary people, and that seemed good to me.
I started studying the above surgery. At first, I thought it was for people who were transitioning to the opposite gender of upper surgery — I was born a woman, I want to be a man — but having breast surgery is for anyone who is uncomfortable.
My surgery was done last summer. Now I’m the happiest I’ve ever had. It was outpatient surgery – recovery was a breeze – what I needed to be to be who I am and be happy and I have no regrets, it was the best decision I ever made.
(My parents are now very supportive, and I appreciate that a lot.)
Everything was after a first operation. I remember trying on a t-shirt without having to wear sports support, and it was the prettiest thing in the world. Buying swimwear. The way clothes feel. Things were adjusting to me now. I had no idea that I could feel so good and confident in my body.
They ask me the same questions over and over again, so I documented my recovery Instagram and began YouTube channel. Now that I’m comfortable with my body, I’ve opened up the weakness to the network and I’m completely honest with people.
I’ve also found that when I share my insides on the net, a lot of people come to my social networks, otherwise they would never follow a transgender person. It’s awesome to share something I like in design and to share who I am as a person that has brought these two worlds together. It allows me to reach people I wouldn’t normally get. That has been really rewarding. I hear more than anything else, ‘I’ve come to your interior and I’m left for queer education’.
