Police said the criminal organization Comando Vermelho prevented the hiring of teenagers for train kidnappings.

Police said at least 25 people were killed Thursday in a shooting by a police officer in an operation against drug traffickers.

The suspects tried to escape from the rooftops, police entered the hut in armored vehicles and saw helicopters flying in the television footage. The blazing fire kept the neighbors at home.

Three policemen were shot and one was wounded in the head in hospital, police said.

Bullets fired during the fight hit a light rail car and injured two passengers from the shattered broken glass window, firefighters said.

Comando Vermelho is one of the leading criminal organizations in Brazil. Police believe Jacarezinho is one of the group’s headquarters.

Thursday’s operation was aimed at investigating the organization for hiring teenagers to hijack trains and commit other crimes, police said in a statement.

The gang of criminals was said to have a “warrior structure of soldiers equipped with rifles, grenades, bulletproof vests, pistols, camouflaged clothing and other military accessories.”

Police said the Comando Vermelho chiefs were among the dead in Jacarezinho.

The Candido Mendes University Public Safety Observatory said that this year at least 12 police operations in the state of Rio have resulted in three deaths or more.

Silvio Ramos, director of the Observatory, said Thursday’s siege is one of the deadliest in the city’s recent history.

“This is the highest number of deaths in a police operation in Rio, having exceeded 19 in the Complexo do Alemão district in 2007, except that we have not lost ours in this action,” police chief Ronaldo Oliveira told Reuters.

The Supreme Court declined to comment on whether the Associated Press asked if Thursday’s operation would be appropriate.

Rio police killed an average of more than five people a day in the first quarter of 2021, the deadliest start to a year since the state government began providing these data regularly more than two decades ago, according to the Observatory.
