Emotional Root has stressed that he is the right man to lead England after the defeat of Ashes

A shocking Joe Root said he would like to continue as England’s test captain despite being hurt by the 4-0 loss to the Ashes series after Australia suffered another major defeat at Hobart on Sunday.

Bellerive Oval’s 146-run loss ended in a series of calamities, where Root’s team was competitive in a few sessions in five trials.

Root’s five-year tenure as skipper was questioned as the tour went from one heavy failure to the next, but the 31-year-old hitter made it clear he wanted to continue working.

“I would like to take this opportunity to move this team forward and turn things around,” he told reporters.

“At the moment, we are going through a really tough stage as a team of players.

“The performances haven’t been good enough, but I wish I could turn things around and start giving the performances you expect from an English Test team.”

Asked if he expected a chance to relinquish his captaincy after a successful series, Root appeared firm.

“I think I’m the right man to lead this team, and if that decision is taken away from me, so be it,” he added.

“But I’d like to take that opportunity.”

Root has publicly spoken out about the shortcomings of his balls and batsmen and said the team had to accept that they were the second best on this tour.

“We have given up on ourselves because we have not given a fair account of what we are capable of,” he said.

“But at the same time, it’s pretty obvious that Australia, at the moment, is a better team than us, in all areas.

“It hurts me to say that, but it’s the reality of things and we have to accept that and find a way to do it better. Find a way to turn things around very quickly.”
