Naomi Osaka has said she is retiring from the French Open due to the dire fall in the decision to boycott all media activity.
“Hello everyone, this is not the situation I imagined or imagined when I posted a few days ago. For the tournament, I think the best thing for other players and my well-being is that I retire so that everyone can focus on the tennis they do in Paris.
“I never wanted to be distracted and I accept that my time was not ideal and my message could have been clearer. More importantly, I would never trivialize mental health or use lightness.
“I’ve actually suffered from long bouts of depression since the US Open in 2018 and I’ve had a very hard time dealing with that.
“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m introverted, and anyone who has seen me in tournaments will notice that wearing headphones often lowers my social anxiety.
“Although the tennis press has always been nice to me (and I want to apologize to all the kind journalists who can hurt me), I am not a natural speaker and I have huge waves of anxiety before talking to the world media.
“I get very nervous and I find it stressful that I always try to give the best possible answers.
“So I was already feeling vulnerable and worried in Paris, so I thought it was better to do self-care and skip press conferences. I informed them in advance because I think the rules are partly outdated and I wanted to highlight that.
“I wrote to the tournament privately apologizing and said I would be happy to talk to them after the tournament because the Slams are alive.
“I’ll take some time off the court, but when the time comes, I want to work with the Tour to discuss ways for players, the press and fans to improve things.
“You hope everything goes well and you can be safe. They love you. I’ll see you when I see you.”
