Shell & Porsche launch first charging station for electric cross-border vehicles in Johor – Wired PR Lifestyle Story

In March 2021, Shell and Porsche Asia Pacific (Porsche) announced their intention to launch a cross-border high-performance charging network (HPC) for electric vehicles (EVs). called HPC Shell RechargeIt is said to be the first in Southeast Asia.

Once implemented, it would provide EV owners with the convenience of traveling from Singapore to Thailand across the Malaysian Peninsula without worrying about the anxiety of the range.

You know: Distance anxiety is the fear of the owner of an electric vehicle because its battery does not have enough charge to make it possible for the vehicle to reach its final destination or to charge a charging point “on the road”.

This HPC network will have 12 charging points distributed at 6 Shell stations located on the North-South Highway in Malaysia.

The first charging point has been set up by Johor Tangka at Lay-By (South Bound) Shell Station. The next point for loading is the Pagoh Rest Area (Southern Border), located in Muar, Johor.

After Johor, other Malaysian states that will host the HPC network include Negeri Sembilan and Perak.

According to reports, all of these charging sites would be fully operational by 2022 H2.

To charge electric vehicles on highways

The stations are equipped with a 180 kW direct current (DC) charger, which Shell says can charge an EV from 0% to 80% in 30 minutes, depending on the model and capacity of an EV.

If only one car is charged, it can benefit from a total rate of 180 kW, if there are 2 cars, both will get a rate of 90 kW.

There are 3 payment levels available for EV owners to choose from:

  • Standard rate (pay per use, no subscription) – RM20 / 5 min.
  • Gold member (one year subscription) – RM12 / 5 minutes for the first 25 minutes, and RM5 / 5 minutes after. (May apply for the first 10 hours of the year.)
  • Platinum member (3-year subscription, free with the purchase of a Porsche Taycan) – RM10 / 5 minutes for the first 25 minutes, and RM5 / 5 minutes after. (May apply for the first 12 hours of the year.)

Each level has a RM4 confirmation fee, and offers a variety of discounts and additional benefits, with more details available. here.

Reservations and payments will be made through the ParkEasy app. When you confirm your reservation, you will be given a parking space with a charging station one hour before arrival.

However, the feelings of Malaysian EV owners seem mild

Taking a look at a local FB team for EV fans and owners, MyEVOC, I was surprised to see that their overall reaction to this news was more inclined towards the “meh” side.

(Clearly, this group does not represent the general population of Malaysian electric vehicle owners, but it still allows us to know what the community thinks about this HPC network.)

Why? Well, there seem to be a couple of reasons. The most common thing I’ve seen is that the prices indicated by Shell are considered high.

Mainly because the owners are being charged in 5 minute intervals (the time required to charge your EV) instead of each kW, the latter is preferred by some owners.

The basis of this argument is also how each EV has its own load-curve. For those unfamiliar with the language, the load curve basically refers to how the load rate of an EV changes over time.

As you complete an EV, it charges more slowly. For an electric vehicle with more than 10% battery power, it is possible to get the juice out quickly and use the full rate of 180 kW offered by Shell.

But when it reaches a range of 50% or more, this rate can be slower, which means that it will not benefit from the 180 kW rate. All of these% figures depend on your EV model.

By now, the owner is paying less kW to continue charging his electric vehicle, as they are charged according to the time spent plugged in.

Moreover, the EV model in this case assumes that it is capable of consuming 180 kW of load in the first place, as some older models limit their load consumption to a much lower kW.

When we last He has interviewed some EV owners about their change of gas station, they shared that there were no major problems with charging stations (or lack thereof).

Each owner may be equipped with their own portable charger (which requires a 3-pin wall outlet to operate). So for a while, Shell’s HPC network would still come in the clutch to get the juice out.
