Ahead of protests to expel Palestinian families and attacks by Israelis on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Israel bombed Gaza.
As the days of major bombings on the Gaza Strip escalated on Wednesday, Israeli fighter jets bombed Palestinian armed groups, as well as police buildings and apartment blocks.
Since the attack began late Monday, the Gaza health ministry says at least 48 people have been killed, including 14 children. More than 300 others were injured.
The Israeli army says about 1,500 rockets have been fired from Gaza into various parts of Israel, killing at least six Israelis.
It is the most intense climb in 2014 since the seven-week Israeli war in Gaza. Here is what caused the onset of the recent violence.
Sheikh Jarrah expulsions
Anger has grown forced expulsion Palestinian families in the occupied Sheikh Jarrah district of East Jerusalem, with multiple lawsuits filed against them by various pro-settler organizations since 1972.
These organizations say the land inhabited by the families was originally Jewish-owned, but Palestinians see it as an extension of Israel’s official policy to displace many Palestinians in Jerusalem in order to maintain a Jewish majority identity in the city.

Protests and clashes between Palestinians, Israeli settlers and Israeli police have been steadily increasing since the end of April. In October 2020, an Israeli court ruled that four Palestinian families should leave their homes and set May 2 as the date for their forced release. However, the court date has been delayed twice.
Lately, they have been confrontations while Palestinians gathered for Iftar meals – the breaking of Ramadan fasts – in the homes of those released. Since then, the families have filed an appeal with the Israeli Supreme Court. At least 30 people were injured and 15 arrested on Thursday night.
Al-Aqsa confrontation clashes and attacks
On Friday, tens of thousands of Muslim worshipers fill The Al-Aqsa mosque complex – the third holiest site in Islam – is set to pray on the last Friday of Ramadan, as many will continue to protest the expulsions.

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes confronted housing buildings and other targets, hil at least 26 Palestinians, including children, were told by Gaza health authorities on Tuesday.
Despite calls for international escalation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Tuesday that Gaza will “increase the strength of attacks and the frequency of attacks.”
Hamas leader Ismail Haniya told mediators that the group is “ready” if it intensifies attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip, saying: “If they (Israel) want to increase, resistance is ready; and if they want to stop, resistance is ready.”

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland, meanwhile, has warned that the situation is heading towards an “absolute war”.
