Following Tim Pain’s statement to Hobart reporters He resigned as captain of the Australia Test cricket team on Friday, the decision approved by the governing body of Cricket Australia:

“Today, I am announcing my decision to step down as captain of the Australian men’s test team. It’s an incredibly difficult decision, but one that is right for me, my family, and cricket.

“As a prelude to my decision, almost four years ago, I participated in a text exchange with a colleague at the time.

“At the time, the exchange was the subject of an in-depth investigation into the CA Integrity Unit, in which I was fully involved and openly involved.

“This investigation and a Cricket Tasmanian (Human Resources) investigation simultaneously found that Cricket had not violated the Australian Code of Conduct.

“Despite being exempt, I deeply regretted this event at the time, and I still do today. I spoke to my wife and family back then and I am very grateful for their forgiveness and support.

“We thought this event was behind me and I could fully focus on the team, as I have done for the last three or four years. However, I recently realized that this private text exchange would become public.

“On reflection, my actions in 2017 do not meet the standard of the Australian cricket captain or the wider community. I feel the pain and sorrow I have caused my wife, my family and the other party.

“I feel the damage this is doing to the reputation of our sport and I think it’s a good decision for me to step down as captain, to take effect immediately.

“I don’t want this to become an unwanted break for the team before the huge Ashes Series. I really liked my role … as captain of the Australian cricket team.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my sporting life to lead the Australian men’s test team.

“I am grateful for the support of my teammates and I am proud of what we have achieved together. I ask for their understanding and forgiveness.

“For Australian cricket fans, I feel like my past behavior has affected our game on the eve of Ashes.

“For the disappointment I have caused the fans and the entire cricket community, I apologize. I have been blessed with a wonderful, loving and caring family, and it breaks my heart to know how much I have left.

“They’ve always been by my side, they’ve been my most loyal fans, and I owe them their support.

“I will continue to be a committed member of the Australian cricket team, and I look forward to seeing Ashes make a huge tour.

“Thank you.”
