South Africa to write to CAF, looking to repeat FIFA Ghana World Cup qualifier

South Africa will file a formal complaint to the African Football Confederation (CAF) and the governing body of the FIFA football world for authority. 1-0 defeat against Ghana on Sunday in the World Cup qualifiers for Africa.

With this result, Ghana beat its opponents to take first place in Group G and advance to the final qualifying round in March, where it hopes to be one of five teams on the continent to reserve its place in Qatar in 2022.

But the South African Football Association (SAFA) hopes to push for a repeat of the match, as their team was “stolen” by Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye and her assistants, who gave the home side a questionable penalty and made several questionable calls.

With South Africa needing a draw to win the team, Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey fell out of play on his penalty area, seemingly on minimal contact, and well-placed Ndiay immediately pointed to the point.

South African Belgium coach Hugo Broos said Ndiay allowed the Ghanaians to be too aggressive in their game, and punished his team for the slightest contact.

“We will write to both CAF and FIFA to first investigate how the match was handled and secondly to challenge some of those decisions,” SAFA CEO Tebogo Mothlante said in a statement.

“We have already registered with the match commissioner that we will make a formal complaint.”

“We feel very robbed because it’s not an isolated event of a penalty. There are a lot of questionable decisions for match officials and we’ll get an expert to look at other facts so we can make a strong case.”

South Africa had to repeat the World Cup qualifier they won 2-1 against Senegal in 2016, with Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey blaming FIFA for illegally influencing the outcome of the match.

Prohibited for life Senegal won 2-0 and qualified for Russia in 2018.

“We are looking at the precedent that FIFA promised us to repeat in Senegal and we believe that if justice is to be done, the same decision should be taken against this game in Ghana,” Mothlant said.
