The famous Brothers Home welfare center in South Korea was supposed to provide shelter and care for the homeless. Instead, it was a house of atrocities, where prisoners were illegally confined, violently beaten, raped, and even killed.
Located in the southern port city of Busan, it operated between 1976 and 1987 under the then-authoritarian government’s “street cleaning” policy, No. 410. known as an ordinance. In the wake of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympics, the government was preparing to show the country to the world and wanted to take it out of the streets and get “meals” out of sight.
But only 10% of the thousands of inmates at Brothers Home were homeless, according to a 1987 investigation by local prosecutors. None of the nine survivors of Al Jazeera 101 East the interviewee lived on the street.
Family members who now run Brothers Home are now being extradited from Australia to face an investigation into the horrific abuse at home by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
