The Cabinet Secretary has left the inquiry into Downing Street parties after complaining that he also broke the rules.

A senior UK official who is investigating allegations of breach of the blockade by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s staff has ruled himself out of the investigation.

Simon Casek, the British cabinet secretary, resigned on Friday after announcing a meeting at his office within the same period.

“To ensure that the ongoing investigation maintains the public’s confidence, the Cabinet Secretary has rejected himself for the rest of the process,” a spokesman for Johnson’s office said.

“The work will be completed by Sue Gray, Leveling Up, Second Permanent Secretary of the Department of Housing and Communities.

“He will verify the facts and present his findings to the Prime Minister.”

Johnson was asked by Caser to investigate earlier this month after a video of the Prime Minister’s staff laughing and joking and showing jokes about a Downing Street party in the 2020 Christmas blockade, when such festivities were banned.

The leaked footage seems to contradict the denial that Johnson and his ministers had a party.

The alleged parties the government, which provoked the disapproval of political opponents and desperate voters, was told last year to sacrifice Christmas events.

Johnson’s Conservatives lost the election on Friday in a former fort, stepping forward pressure to reform its functioning in its 10th legislature.

The victorious Liberal Democrat centrist candidate for North Shropshire, Helen Morgan, said voters said loud and clear: “Boris Johnson, the party is over.”

Cas resigned after the Guido Fawkes website said two events had taken place in his private office last December.

The BBC said invitations had been sent to one of the events called the “Christmas party”.

A BBC government spokesman said office staff had taken part in a virtual questionnaire, and a small number had gathered from their desks.

“The cabinet secretary did not attend the event, but walked from the group’s office to his office,” the spokesman told the BBC.

“No outside guests or other staff were invited or attended. This lasted for an hour and the attendees bought drinks and snacks. He also spoke briefly with the office staff before leaving.”
