Don McGahn testified in Congress on Friday after being summoned two years ago.

Former White House attorney for President Donald Trump Don McGahn He “clarified” Russia’s role in the 2016 U.S. election and “the pressure the lawyer put on him to interfere with the federal probe,” Congress Democrats said Friday.

McGahn, who served as Trump’s presidential attorney for nearly two years before resigning in October 2018, gave a full-day closed-door statement to the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee.

He appeared under a subpoena sent about McGahn two years ago to declare that the commission was examining Trump’s allegations of wrongdoing. In late 2019, the House decided to oust Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He was acquitted by the Senate, then under Republican control.

A transcript of McGahn’s testimony is due to be made public in the coming days. According to the agreement reached with the Department of Justice, the members of the Judiciary Committee did not want to give details of what had been said so far.

“Mr. McGahn was overwhelmed by President Trump’s repeated refusal to follow his legal advice, and he has now clarified several troubling facts today,” committee chairman Jerrold Nadler said in a statement.

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz told reporters that McGahn’s testimony does not provide any new information, however.

“It was hoped that Don McGahn would be an indispensable witness to bring in the new information he deserves over the years of litigation and the amount of tax dollars he deserves,” Gaetz said of the Democrats.

Representative Madeleine Dean, the Democratic Judiciary Committee, told McGahn that journalists “have been under pressure to direct the president to direct other aides to oust Special Adviser Rod Rosenstein (Robert) Mueller.”

At the time, Rosenstein was the deputy attorney general and was examining Mueller Trump and the 2016 presidential campaign.

After a lengthy investigation, Mueller found “numerous links” between the campaign and the Russians, and concluded that the campaign “hoped it would be beneficial” from Moscow’s efforts to turn the vote in favor of Trump. Mueller said those interactions were not criminal behavior or would be difficult to prove in court.

As a White House adviser, McGahn had an inner vision that Mueller and his team were conducting a potential study to interfere with justice in the Russian investigation.

McGahn proved to be a key – and damned – witness against Trump, citing his name in the text of the Mueller report and in his footnotes hundreds of times.

McGahn told investigators the president made repeated efforts to drown the probe and said the directive was received from the president.

He said Trump had asked the then Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, to contact him to order him not to withdraw from the Russian investigation. McGahn said Trump was begging Rod Rosenstein to tell Attorney General at the time to remove Mueller from office because of conflicts of interest and, after reporting the episode to the media, to publicly and falsely deny it. the request was never made.

McGahn also described the circumstances surrounding Trump’s removal from office of FBI Director James Comey, among other things, with the president stressing that to include in the closing letter that Comey reassured Trump that he was not personally investigating.
