Star batsman replaces Virat Kohli as the Indian cricket board announces the band for their next tour of New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma has been named the new captain of India’s T20 team, replacing Virat Kohli, the cricket board said after the team was knocked out of the World Cup.
The Indian Cricket Control Commission (BCCI) tweeted on Tuesday that the 34-year-old starting batsman had been “named Captain T20I of India” when he announced the team for his next tour of New Zealand. Opener KL Rahul has been appointed deputy for Rohit.
Kohli, who took over as captain of T20I in 2017, announced his decision to leave in September, citing his “tremendous workload”. He remains the patron of a day and Test teams.
The announcement that former batting legend Rahul Dravid would replace Ravi Shastri as coach of all formats after the World Cup, India did not qualify for the finals.
Right-winger Sharma, known for his hard blow, made his national team debut in 2007, initially playing limited cricket before joining the Test team in 2013.
Sharma also took on the captain of the Mumbai Indians, winning five times in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by Kohli, has never won a title.
Kohli was also not named in the T20 team to give the batsman time to rest for the New Zealand tour. Also left out were bowlers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, and bowler Ravindra Jadeja.
The New Zealand tour will begin on November 17 with the first of three T20 matches followed by two Test matches.
The selectors have made several changes to the squad that appears in the UAE, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel, and Hardik left Pandya very nice.
The first T20 is scheduled for November 17 in Jaipur, followed by Ranchin on November 19 and Kolkata on November 21.
Sharma has played 116 T20 international matches, scoring 3029 races and averaging over 32. He has combined 9205 races in 227 ODIs and averaged 3047 out of 43 Test matches in almost 47.
India suffered harsh criticism at home for its poor performance at the T20 World Cup, including its humiliating defeat against its main rival Pakistan and New Zealand.
But Shastrik said on Monday that five years after his last game, the current team was “one of the biggest cricket teams in the history of the game.”
“We may not have won this World Cup, but I think we will continue to be a strong team in the future because the IPL includes a lot of young players. Rahul (Dravid) will have his ideas to move this group forward, ”Shastrik said.
“I think you have a very guy theme in Rohit. IPL has won a lot. He is the deputy captain of this party. He is waiting in the wings to take on this job, ”added Shastrik.
Kohli tweeted on Monday: “Together we set out to achieve our goal. Unfortunately, we fell short and no one is more disappointed than us as a side.”
“It has been a great support from all of you and we are grateful for everything. We will aim to come back stronger and do our best. ”
