FIFA president Gianni Infantino accused those who were opposed to changing the frequency of the World Cup every two years for fear of change and wanted to maintain a high level of play on Friday because Africa backed the plans.
In an appearance at European and South American confederations that have come out against the plan to change the current four-year cycle, Infantino said they did not want to change things because they are at the forefront of the sport.
Speaking at a conference of the African Football Confederation in Cairo on Friday, African countries voted unanimously in favor of changing the organization of the World Cup every two years.
“The opposites are the ones above. It happens in all sectors of life when there are reforms and changes, those at the top don’t want to change anything because they are at the top, ”Infantino said.
“And they are afraid that if something changes, their leadership position will be in jeopardy.

“But at the same time, we can’t close the door, we need to keep the door open, we need to give hope and opportunities,” he added.

Infantino stressed that increasing the frequency of hosting FIFA’s flagship event would offer more opportunities for countries outside the top tier of the world’s game.
“We need to give more opportunities to world football so that African football can shine on a global scale.”
Infantino said he would continue to consult the opinion on his proposal, but did not give him time to implement it.
UEFA said a new schedule would have a detrimental effect on the balance between local, domestic, continental and international competitions.
The South American organization CONMEBOL said the project “turns its back on the nearly 100-year-old world football tradition”.
The number of World Cup finalists will increase from 32 to 48 in the 2026 edition, co-organized by Canada, Mexico and the US.
