New Zealand captain Tom Latham broke 252 before Trent Boult and Tim Southe broke the deadlock with the ball in Bangladesh on Monday in the second and final round of the second and final round of Christchurch to put the home side on track to win.

With a stunning defeat at the opening of the Mount Maunganui series, the New Zealand world champion won 521 for 6 before declaring his first inning at the Hagley Oval. Boult (5 for 43) and Southee (3 for 28) were then combined to take Bangladesh 126 to take a 395 lead.

Boult also became the fourth player in New Zealand – after Richard Hadlee, Daniel Vettori and Southee – to claim 300 Test wickets.

“As a team, we’re not about milestones and so on, but it certainly feels great to join a runaway club,” Boult told the official announcer.

“I thought we used pretty good conditions, a bit of a swing, and the bounce and pace that was offered in this beautiful land pretty well.”

Three Centuries in Five Tests

Devon Conway, without a 99 win on Sunday, hit the first ball of the day in his fifth test to reach a third-century limit. Conway 109 came out with Latham after appearing at a 215 race stand.

Starting with a score of 186 tonight, Latham rose to 200 with four covers for Taskin Ahmed and became the second player in New Zealand, behind Stephen Fleming, with two scores above 250. The captain threw two six-pointers at his teammate Mominul Hake in Bangladesh on three balls, but was ruled out by a third. He hit a 34-hour limit on more than nine hours of custody.

Ross Taylor, in his final test, made it 28 and Tom Blundell broke it down to 57 without a win before Latham testified.

When they returned, Boult and Southee reduced their lead to Bangladesh by 11 for 4 overs, with Latham making two catches.

Bangladesh dropped to 27 when it fell to Liton Das Boult at 5, before Yasir Ali (55) and Nurul Hasan (41) collided with a 60-run partnership.
