New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the second round against India as he continues to suffer a left elbow injury, which has been a major concern for 2021. Tom Latham will be the leader in Mumbai.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead confirmed that the injury had been triggered in the first test of the Camphor.

“It’s been very hard for Kane to deal with such a permanent injury,” Stead said in a statement issued by the New Zealand Cricket.

“Although we have been able to manage the injury and the T20 World Cup throughout the year, moving to Test cricket and increasing the bat load has exacerbated the elbow,” Stead said.

“In the end the injury is not good, and while he passed the Kanpur Test, it was clear that playing the second Test was not an option. We all know how much he loves playing and directing this team, especially in Test cricket, so it’s a very difficult decision to be away.

“It’s been a difficult year for Kane trying to manage his elbow and it’s important to formulate a good plan with him now to keep him from suffering injuries.
