South African captain Temba Bavuma said he has full confidence in the biosecurity protocols established by the country’s cricket committee (CSA) ahead of his tour of India this month.

South African sport began to close on Friday with the emergence of a new variant of coronavirus, called Omicron, with travel bans and restrictions on flights leaving rugby teams and golfers confused to leave the country.

South Africa will host India in a three-round series that will start on December 17 in Johannesburg, followed by three international matches a day (ODI) and four Twenty20 matches. “I am confident that our BSEs (Bio-Safety Environments) are of the highest security standards,” Bavuma said on Wednesday.

“Playing cricket in a BSE was a huge challenge for everyone involved in the game … The CSA should praise the way it has done around the BSE.”

South African Test captain Dean Elgar said that despite being in a bubble, the players accepted the need for strict protocols. “It causes a head injury to a player and yet this team continues to give good results and make progress, I personally don’t think there is enough talk,” Elgar said.

“We don’t know how much longer we will be like this, but it’s gratifying to know that the health and safety of everyone involved when visits are made is a priority.”

The Netherlands’s ODI tour to South Africa was postponed on Tuesday and the Zimbabwe women’s cricket World Cup qualifier was also canceled after a new variant was discovered.
