Syrian migrants found dead at border between Poland and Belarus Migration News

Polish police said the body of a man was found near the village of Wolka Terechowska, the latest victim of the border conflict.

Polish police say the body of a young Syrian man has been found in a forest near the Belarusian border, the latest victim of a political conflict on the eastern border of the European Union.

The Minsk government has been pushing for irregular migration across the border to EU nations in Poland, Lithuania and Latvia for months. The three countries are tightening their borders, trying to block the newly opened migration route, and the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous as winter approaches.

“Yesterday, in the forest, near the border, near Wolka Terechowska, the body of a young Syrian was found,” Podlaska regional police said on Twitter on Saturday.

“The activities carried out at the place where the body was found did not allow the cause of death to be determined with certainty.”

The migration, promoted by former President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, has now brought the death toll to at least nine.

Many migrants come from Syria, Iraq or other parts of the Middle East to seek a better life in Europe for people who want to escape conflict and hope. Polish border guards estimate that there are currently about 4,000 migrants camped on the border.

After the great migration to Europe in 2015, Europe has continued to strengthen its borders to remind newcomers. However, every year, tens of thousands try to enter, making dangerous and sometimes deadly journeys by sea and land.

Since the summer, there seemed to be thousands of new and easier ways to get around Europe, all over Belarus.

The EU accuses Lukashenko of creating an artificial path after failing to retaliate for the sanctions imposed on his government after the 2020 elections and the subsequent crackdown on internal dissent.
