Sunil Gavaskar believes Sourav Ganguly is the best person to clean the air with a contradictory statement on the subject of Virat Kohli’s captaincy, and said the BCCI president should “be sure to ask” how the difference in perception arose.
A few days after Kohli left the T20I captaincy, Ganguly said the BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision. Kohli, however, contradicted Ganguly’s statement in an explosive press conference on Wednesday ahead of the start of the South African Test Series.
“I don’t think (Kohli’s comment) brings it to the image of the BCCI. I think it’s the individual who has to get the impression that he got the message from Kohli. So that’s the only thing,” Gavaskar said. India Today.
“Yes, he (Ganguly) is the president of the BCCI and he must be asked why there is such a disagreement. He is probably the best person to ask about the disagreement between what you have to say and what the Indian captain has said.”
Kohli’s comments revealed tensions between him and BCCI officials after he was also removed as ODI’s boss earlier this month.
He said his removal from the ODI captaincy took place 90 minutes before the selection of the South African tour team, but Gavaskar believed that Chetan Sharma was not wrong on the part of the chairman of the selection committee.
“What’s the controversy here? The chairman of the selectors has made it clear that now we don’t consider you to be the captain of the ODI, that’s fine. The selectors are the ones who have full authority in the selection committee meetings.
“As always, he (Kohli) has announced something he doesn’t know from the media or the commander of a passenger flight as has happened in the past. I think the chairman of the selection committee told him.
“I don’t know what they wanted to do. As long as there has been communication between the chairman of the selection committee and him, it’s decent,” he added.

Gavaskar said it was time for the BCCI to launch clear channels of communication to prevent such failures in the future.
