The governing body says it has taken the decision because the new variant has spread rapidly “in Europe and Africa”.
Morocco has said it will suspend passenger flights for two weeks as concerns about a new and highly mutated variant of the coronavirus called Omicron grow.
A government commission responsible for overseeing the country’s COVID-19 response said in a statement on Sunday that the measure would take effect from 23:59 (22:59 GMT) on Monday and would be regularly assessed to make “necessary” adjustments.
“The decision was taken because the new COVID variant, Omicron, has spread rapidly, namely in Europe and Africa, and … to protect the health of Moroccan citizens,” he said.
The forecast came in Israel and within hours he said it will close its borders to foreign tourists from Sunday afternoon over Omicron.
The variant was first detected in South Africa, with cases reported in several countries, and many pushed nations to re-establish travel restrictions that were expected to be a thing of the past.
Morocco, whose economy is based on tourism, announced on Friday it would ban entry to travelers from South Africa and six other African countries.
He had already decided to suspend flights to France and France as a result of the rise in coronavirus infections in Europe.
France has the largest Moroccan exiled community in the world, and more than one million Moroccans live in the European Union.
In October, Morocco said it had suspended flights to Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia due to concerns about coronavirus trends in those countries.
Morocco has officially registered about 950,000 coronavirus cases and more than 14,700 deaths.
Earlier this month, the North African kingdom removed the night-time limit set a month earlier to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
