Captain Vincent Aboubakar scored a two-goal penalty for Burkina Faso’s 2-1 win over Burkina Faso.

The Cameroonian host has started the African Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Burkina Faso.

He came from behind Cameroon at the end of the first half with two penalties in the opening match to win Burkina Faso on Sunday.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar scored two penalties, the first on the right side of the goal and the second on the left quietly entering the home side to make the rematch sigh.

Cameroon waited a three-year delay to host the Africa Cup of Nations, after the 2019 tournament was canceled and the 2021 host was delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Burkina Faso were the first to score at the Olembe Stadium Yaound goal, with Gustavo Sangare scoring in the 24th minute.

The goal was scored by Burkina Faso after a header was deflected and hit the crossbar in the same game.

But Burkina Faso lost the lead at the end of the first half with two defenders.

Bertrand Traore entered Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to give Cameroon his first penalty, which was confirmed after Algerian judge Mustapha Ghorbal consulted the VAR.

VAR is used for the first time in every African Cup match. It was used from the quarter-finals onwards in the last African Cup.

Shortly afterwards, Issoufou Dayo fouled Nouhou Tolori and Aboubakar scored again three minutes into the first half.

Burkina Faso threatened with a return in the second half as Traor tried to get Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana from a distance with a free kick and Adama Guira then saved an attempt by Onana, but the home side held on.

The Africa Cup of Nations officially began with a brief opening ceremony a few hours earlier at Olembe Stadium.

Coronavirus restrictions limited the crowd at Olembe Stadium to 80 percent of its capacity for 60,000 people, but that did not ruin the party and the fireworks of the hosts and celebrations lit up the sky after the match.

The match and opening ceremony were attended by Paul Biya, 88-year-old Cameroonian president who has ruled the Central African country for 40 years, as well as FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the head of the African Football Confederation, Patrice Motsepe.

Cape Verde and Ethiopia will play their second Group A match on Sunday at Olembe Stadium.
