Former England skipper Ray Illingworth, who was the famous captain of the 1970-71 Australian Ashes victory team, said he was receiving treatment to treat intestinal cancer.

He was captain of England in 31 Test matches between 1958 and 1973 and played in the first one-day international in 1971, while Illingworth also served as a national team manager and coach.

The 89-year-old man, who died after his wife Shirley died of cancer in March, said he hoped to fully recover.

“They removed a lot of the tumors, but there were still two inches left, which was initially eight,” Illingworth said. Daily Telegraph.

“They hope to get rid of the last part with extra double doses (radiotherapy). I’ll see how these next two doses go, with my fingers crossed and I hope to have some luck.

“I don’t want to be with my wife for the last 12 months. She had a great time going from hospital to hospital and in pain. I don’t want that,” she added.
