Security forces appeared to be retaking the streets of Kazakhstan’s main city, Almaty, after days of violence.
The former head of Kazakhstan’s home intelligence agency has been arrested on suspicion of high treason after being released amid violent protests.
The National Security Council, or KNB, said on Saturday that its former leader Karim Masimov – a close ally of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev – had been arrested on Thursday after launching an investigation into high-profile allegations.
“On January 6 this year, the National Security Commission launched a pre-trial investigation into the high treason,” he said. “On the same day, KNB KK Masimov was arrested and placed in a pre-trial detention center, along with others, on suspicion of committing this crime.”

Moscow sent troops to help calm the protests and a day later, police patrolled the streets lined with rubble from Almaty on Friday, although some shots were still heard.
Demonstrations began in response to rising fuel prices, but became a broad movement against the government and Nazarbayev, who was the longest-serving ruler of the 81-year-old Soviet state, until Tokayev took over the presidency in 2019.
