Moscow said one of its warships fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs on the British ship HMS Defender on Wednesday, forcing it to force Russia out of the area around Crimea. Britain denied the allegation, saying it had not fired its ship and said it was sailing in Ukrainian waters.
Russian drills, which began in the eastern Mediterranean on Friday, come from a group of British transport strikers.

Russia has been waging a military campaign in Syria since September 2015, allowing the government of President Bashar al-Assad to regain control of the entire country after a devastating civil war.
The Russian Defense Ministry has said that a pair of MiG-31 fighter jets capable of carrying hypersonic missiles from Kinzhal have arrived at a Russian air base in Syria for exercise. Hemeimeem Air Base, in the coastal Latakia province, is the main site of operations in Moscow.
This is the first time warplanes capable of carrying Kinzhal have been deployed beyond Russia’s borders.
The military says Kinzhal flies 10 times the speed of sound and has a range of 2,000 kilometers.
The Ministry of Defense said the maneuvers in the Eastern Mediterranean link several warships, two submarines and long-range Tu-22M3 bombers along with other combat aircraft.
The supersonic and nuclear-powered capabilities of the Tu-22M3 went to Syria for the first time last month as a sign of the rise of the Russian military in the Mediterranean.
The Russian military has modernized the Hemeimeem runway to accommodate heavy bombers and built a second one to expand operations there.
Russia has also expanded and modified a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus, the only facility it currently has outside the former Soviet Union.
The Russian military has increased the number and extent of drillings amid strained relations with the West, following post-Cold War minimums after Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine in 2014.
As part of President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to improve the Russian military, in recent years the navy has revived the Soviet-era practice of constantly rotating its warships in the Mediterranean.
Speaking to reporters aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth on Sunday, Commodore Steve Moorhouse said the Eastern Mediterranean had “piled up and clashed” over Russia’s heavier military presence in Syria, resulting in regular encounters with Russian ships and warplanes.
He noted that the Russian warship had reached 16 km from the carrier.
Russia has warned the UK and the US of a “tempting fate”
Russia, meanwhile, warned Britain and the United States on Friday against the “tempting fate” by sending warships to the Black Sea, saying it would defend its borders by all possible means, including military force.
In a statement broadcast on state television, the Defense Ministry said it was not advised to bring British and US ships closer to the Crimean coast.
“We call on the Pentagon and the British Navy to send their warships to the Black Sea to try their luck in vain,” said General General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the ministry.
HMS Defender said it was “only one goal” for the defenses of the Black Sea Fleet.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said one by one that Washington and London were sowing conflicts unless Crimea agreed to be part of Russia, and that Russia was ready to use all its borders, including military force.
