FIFA World Cup qualifiers: Iran remove Porto striker Taremi from the team

Porto striker Mehdi Taremi has been ruled out of the Iranian national team in the coming days by World Cup qualifier Dragan Skocic against Lebanon and Syria.

No reason has been given to Taremi, the Portuguese league leader who has scored 10 goals this season, who has been left out of Skocic’s 27-man squad, and will face the Lebanese on Thursday five days later to face Syria.

Taremi’s strike partnership with Sardar Azmoun has been crucial for the Iranians to sit in the Qatar 2022 Asian Group A playoffs.

Iran has 10 points from its first four games and is two points behind South Korea, with only the top two qualifiers assured of qualifying for the finals.

The Iranians are expected to advance to the third consecutive World Cup and a total of six.
