On Friday, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke stated that he used “ministerial discretion” to revoke the visa for tennis stars “in the public interest.” Shortly after Hawk’s verdict, Djokovic’s lawyers began another appeal in an attempt to revoke Djokovic’s visa, which resulted in an out-of-court trial at the Federal Circuit and the Family Court.

Judge Anthony Kelly, although Djokovic may have been in Australia initially but was not included against COVID-19 earlier this month, was on trial. Djokovic received an exception from the tournament organizers.

Djokovic’s lawyer, Nick Wood, informed Kelly that he hoped to hear the appeal on Sunday, which would mean that Djokovic could recover his visa and compete in the Australian Open, which starts on Monday. Here’s how CBS News explained what Djokovic’s lawyers should do:

“Djokovic’s lawyers must receive two urgent orders. One is an order that prevents him from being expelled, just like the order he obtained last week. The second would give Hawke a visa to play for Djokovic.”

Djokovic is due to return to immigration detention on Saturday morning when he meets with Australian Border Force officials. If Djokovic ends up being eliminated, he may not be able to enter Australia within three years.

The Australian Open aims to be the most sought after men’s Grand Slam cap of all time. The 34-year-old star is tied with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic would be the first male player to win 21.
