Five people were injured in the accident, including three children, when an injured boat collided with a cargo ship.

At least 26 people have been killed after a passenger boat collided with a sand carrier in the latest maritime disaster to hit Bangladesh.

Police on Monday said the boat carrying about 36 passengers from Mawa village had entered another vessel on the Padma River near the rural village of Shmahar.

“So far we have recovered 26 bodies, including a woman. We also rescued five injured people, including three children, “said police official Amir Hossain.

Hossain said the bow of the passenger ship was destroyed when it entered the side of the transport vessel and quickly sank.

The boat was carrying passenger transport in violation of government restrictions during the closure of the national coronavirus, said a senior government official in the Rahima Khatun area.

Divers and local people recovered 26 bodies from the water and were still searching for the missing.

Witness Abdur Rahman said there was a lot of noise when the boats collided and then the ships capsized.

“When we set off we found the motorcycle split in two. Hundreds of civilians immediately began rescue work before joining police and firefighters, ”he said.

Slow ferry transport

Bangladesh is building the largest road and railway bridge in the country near the scene of the accident, and police said agents were immediately at the scene.

Construction work has slowed down river ferry transport, and many have been encouraged to travel on unsafe boats, as it takes them about 15 minutes to make the crossing, with a maximum of two hours on the ferries.

Khatun said they would investigate the motorcyclist, who allegedly hit the transport vessel that was moored at the time.

“An anti-accident probe has been ordered,” he said.

Marine accidents are common in Bangladesh, a delta nation crossed by hundreds of rivers.

Authorities have blamed poor maintenance, flat safety regulations on shipyards and overcrowding in many accidents.

Ships that transport sand are scarce in the water and are difficult to see in poor condition, especially when there is poor light.

In early April, more than 30 people were killed when a ferry carrying 50 passengers traveling home from the city center of Narayanganj crashed into a larger cargo ship ahead of the coronavirus closure.

In June last year, a ferry sank in the capital Dhaka, followed by another ferry and killed at least 32 people.

In February 2015, at least 78 people were killed when a crowded boat collided with a cargo ship.
