England test captain Joe Root has said he expects to have a discussion with Azeem Rafiq after the Ashes series against Australia starting next month on the former Yorkshire player’s allegation of institutional racism at the club.

Rafiq, a 30-year-old former England Under-19 captain who was originally from Pakistan and played for Yorkshi between 2008-14, told a British Parliamentary committee this month that he had been subjected to “cruelty” in his dealings with the county.

The Yorkshire player Root said he had never personally seen any racist incidents at the club, and said Rafiq was “terribly hurt” by those words.

“We’ve exchanged a couple of messages since then … and we hope to be able to sit down at the end of this tour and talk about this situation, how we can move the game forward,” Root told reporters.

“Along with talking to Azeem, I want to talk to (Yorkshire President) Kamlesh Patel … It’s important to keep finding ways to improve the sport, and to find ways to make things better and make a real difference.”

Root, who sided with Australia in the first of five Ashes tests on Dec. 8, said he supported Yorkshi’s statement that he did not personally witness racism.

“If they’re supervised by me, it’s an area we all need to learn and I need to learn,” Root added.

“I’ve been thinking about things that have happened since then. There have been things that have happened on a cricket pitch where I feel like I’ve come in and called things.

“It comes from growth and learning, understanding and education. I still need more education and more development. Within our game … everyone does it.”
