The warring parties will meet in Doha to speed up the peace talks stalled on the second day of the three-day ceasefire.
Taliban and Afghan government negotiators have met in Qatar, according to the warring parties, after a long hiatus in peace talks between the two.
The development took place on Friday, the second day of a three-day ceasefire announced by the Taliban for Muslim holidays in Eid al-Fitr.
Negotiations began in September last year to find a way to end the decades-long war. Since the United States began withdrawing troops from Afghanistan on May 1, talks have stalled after a few rounds and violence has escalated.
“Both sides discussed the country’s ongoing situation and stressed the speed of Doha peace talks,” the negotiating team representing the Afghan government said on Twitter.
Taliban political bureau spokesman Mohammad Naeem posted a similar message on Twitter, adding that the two sides had agreed to continue talks after the Eid holiday.
Finding common ground between the two warring sides has been a top priority in Western capitals, especially Washington, and it has announced that it will withdraw all U.S. troops by September to end its 20-year military presence in Afghanistan.
The Taliban refused to attend a Washington-sponsored Istanbul conference in Washington last month in a bid to speed up peace talks. The event was later postponed indefinitely.
