Injured skipper Williamson NZ has been sidelined for at least two months

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will be sidelined with an elbow tendon injury for at least two months, coach Gary Stead said on Tuesday, leaving him out of the two-match home series in January against Bangladesh.

Repeated injuries also forced Williamson to miss a second test against India in Mumbai, where New Zealand set a record 372 runs on Monday to lose the series 1-0.

“Kane is doing well,” Stead told Mumbai reporters the day before the group returned home. “I said from the beginning, I hoped it would be a long time coming.

“Last time … it was about eight or nine weeks. I hope to be somewhere again in that period.”

Stead said he was not undergoing joint surgery, but Williamson was reluctant to predict that he would be fit to face South Africa in both tests in February and March.

“We’re trying not to set a time limit,” Stead added. “It simply came to our notice then.

“Kane is working hard, don’t get me wrong. He hates the thought of losing any cricket, let alone trying cricket in New Zealand.”

It was the Indian series that was defended by the Black Caps in defending their World Test title this year.

Although he was unhappy that he was thrown out of the 62nd game in Mumbai, Stead was happy that the first test in Kanpur would earn him some points in the tournament.

“A lot of teams come in and are fighting, so getting points from here … it was a really good achievement,” he said.

“India was better than us in their conditions.”
