Goals from substitute Amr Sayoud and extra time for Yacine Brahimi made it 2-0 for Algeria’s neighbors Tunisia on Saturday at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar in the Arab Cup final.

He added the Arab crown to Algeria’s 2019 African Cup of Nations title and will defend it in Cameroon next month.

Sayoud, 31, made his international debut in the opening match of the Algerian tournament, but did not play again until just over an hour into the final.

His thunderous shot in the 99th minute gave Tunisian goalkeeper Mouez Hassen no chance and made Sayoud an immediate national hero.

Brahimi put in a breakaway with the final shot of the match, Tunisia pushed them all into a final corner and ran out of control after the Algerian defense cleared the ball.

Both countries were playing without a European player and looked tired at the end of the 18-day tournament, but continued to struggle to score goals in the backdrop of a tumultuous atmosphere offered by 60,456 people.

The tournament was designed as a rehearsal for next year’s World Cup. This is the first time that fans have entered the stadiums built by the Arabian Gulf states to prepare for the World Cup.

Thousands of Algerian, Tunisian and Qatari flags flew north along the desert highway to Al Bayt Stadium, 50 kilometers north of the Qatari capital, Doha.

The stadium, in black and white that resembles a giant tent of Bedouin traditionally used by nomadic tribes in the Arabian Gulf, will host the opening match of the World Cup.
