The rapper Cashh was deported from the UK seven years ago. Now he’s back with the movie “Return Of The Man”.

It seems that Cashh, a 27-year-old rapper from south London, lived much longer than the years that his age would suggest. Although he grew up in the UK, he was born in the Park Lane area of ​​Kingston, Jamaica, and arguably began his musical journey there – home to Reggae and Dancehall music.

Speaking via Zoom to BuzzFeed News, Cashh said he grew up around parties. Some of his earliest musical memories are lying in bed at night and listening to music being played from a distance, but being too young to go. It didn’t take long, though, until he got out to these dances: he thought the first time he went to the party was somewhere between 3 and 4 years old.

That’s partly why he seems to have lived so long: he’s had confidence and has been navigating the world since he was a child surrounded by people older than him. These experiences have also been documented by one of those seniors who danced at the entrance to the 2020 “Trench Baby” track.

Like many people, Cashh told his older brother that his favorite was inspired to go to music – he told BuzzFeed News that he was “always that kid who was with him in the studio or at home.” Eventually, his brother offered him the chance to put a verse to a song.

His brother is not the only inspiration for his music. What inspired him was his ability to entertain and educate at the same time. With that he tries to leave gems, albeit a few. “Being able to put stories together – especially real-life experiences – is one of my favorite things about making music,” he said.

But his life has not been a game and a fun game, and at the worst possible moment he had to face one of the most difficult experiences anyone could have. Having lived most of his young life in the UK – and causing a stir around his music under the name Cashtastic – Home Office He was deported to Jamaica in 2014.

Speaking of exile, Cashh admitted that it gave him a life experience. “It humbled me,” he told BuzzFeed News. “It made me much more alert and militant. It made me much weaker.”

“It was a crazy experience, but what I know is that in order to move forward in my life – I needed to.”

Five years later he returned to the UK, and changed his stage name from Cashtastic to Cashh.

“The change from Cashtastic to Cashh was really a change back,” he explained. “I started the game as Cashh. My real name is Cashief, so when you remove ‘ief’ that’s where Cashh comes from.”

The change had another element, that of growth, and the feeling that it no longer existed under the name Cashtastic.

Cashh said he had a much greater attunement to himself after returning to Jamaica and having time to better understand himself, and with that, when he returned to the UK, he wanted to be as loyal as possible to himself.

Cashh’s latest project – a mixtape with the right title Return of the immigrant, leaving in August – has been working for five years. Because of his perfectionist nature, Cashh has been recording and shaping the music for this project since he was in Jamaica.

Asked about the version of the project in Jamaica – and how it changed – our discussion turned to Afro-swing and how it shares its core with Dancehall, from which Drill introduced it as the main sound. United Kingdom.

With this new sound, Cashh had to find a balance between the more melodic music he made in Jamaica and the raw, raw sound he knew was next to his music.

Now that new music is in the sky, we’ve talked about its recording process. It’s pretty unorthodox: Cashh prefers to be in the studio with the producer as he’s doing the rhythm, but even if that’s not possible, he likes being in the studio the first time he hears a rhythm. He doesn’t even write, at least not in the usual sense of sitting down and putting a pen on paper. Instead, he does it in his head based on his reaction to what he hears.

“It could be the melodies that come in, they could be flow patterns, they could be a couple of things coming up,” Cashh explains. “But I have to drop that the first time I hear music.”

From there he fills in the gaps with the letters – and he likes to do all this in the dark. It’s about focusing. When he’s recording, he doesn’t want to distract you from anything.

Music aside, Cashh has a lot going for him. A documentary is in the works, a clothing line called Proud Immigrant is being launched and much more. Despite being reserved and busy, he continues to be the focus of music – and that’s what he wants other people to pay attention to as well.

“Who has ever been my main fan and is aware of what I’ve experienced … You really don’t have a second chance,” Cashh said. “But I feel like I have a second chance.”

Along with that comes the grace and desire to offer it to all the people who still support it, and in that respect, music speaks for itself.
