This weekend, my friend gave birth to a baby girl (named Georgie, how pretty is that ?!). I’m excited to help him, so I thought again my postpartum experiences and read readers’ comments to find out what to bring and what to do. Here are 10 ways to help a new parent …

1. Bring FRESH FOOD. “When our second one was born we received a lot of frozen food meals (I appreciate it a lot! Don’t get me wrong!) And then someone showed up with trays of cut vegetables and fruits, and it was almost BEST, hey,” he says. Ros. A reader named Molly she agrees: “We ate so many heavy casseroles (overjoyed that the postpartum hunger isn’t fragile), but it’s a great gift to cut fruit and vegetables.” You can also make a great salad, he says Devorah: “Pre-made salad with side decoration. I really wanted salads, but it was tiring to stand at the vegetable cutting counter. This can be done at home or picked up from a salad, which is great too! ”

2. You can also supply a refrigerator. “When we got our first baby back home, our neighbors had our fridge stocked, and STILL, 11 years later, I think how wonderful it was,” she says. Amanda. “Juice, meat, cheese, bread, fresh fruit, potato salad, chicken salad, soup – fast food at any time of the day. Plus, a chocolate cake might be best.” the BEST gift has been a gift package Russ and daughters, which included coffee, bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon and chocolate flakes, ”he wrote. Jamie. “I enjoyed it !!!”

3. Choose the food you like. “People are kind when they ask you what you want to eat, but I was tired of making decisions,” he recalls. Joana. A reader named Naomi agrees: “The day we came home from the hospital, my husband and mother-in-law were asking me what I wanted for lunch. I said, do me anything! I can’t make that decision! ”

4. Bring soft pajamas and / or a gown. “My mother-in-law gave me the softest and lightest cotton pajamas and gown,” she says. K.. “I lived in that one and I secretly loved that it was just for me, at first, because it’s about the baby.” Voucher: Consider cleaning first. Megan says, “My mom brought me some comfortable new pajamas, which she washed with baby wash! It was amazing to take that extra step, because being a first time mom I was very paranoid about my baby’s sensitive skin.”

5. Or consider a new set of underwear. “That’s all I wanted,” he writes Joetta. “During my pregnancy, I stretched everything. The nice underpants made me feel good again. ‘

6. Offer to stay OR leave. New parents want to be alone or want company, so follow their path. “My co-worker was on maternity leave, and one day I was in her neighborhood,” she recalls Cynthia. “I stopped at a store, bought two sandwiches and a drink, and wrote to him in five minutes that I was going to leave and stay or go for a few minutes. When she opened the door, she burst into tears. The best thing that happened to him all week was his own lunch and half-hour gossip. ” Also, consider the time. “If you can get out of work early, make your visit one night a week, an hour or two before your friend’s partner gets home from work (which is the hardest two hours of the day on maternity leave!),” Says Maggie. Joy replies, “Oh, that’s great. I was such a watchmaker by 4:00 when I was on leave at home.”

7. Create sleeves and work on what you see. When Toby was a newborn, my friend Abbey came over and, without asking, made all our dishes, and I remember crying out of kindness. “Take out the trash. Walk the dog. Don’t ask him to hold the baby unless he offers to. Listen to him,” he says. Jordan. Throw away a load of clothes, or fold small monkeys. “The best thing anyone did was come into my house and put a new set of sheets on the bed. Heaven, ”writes Whitney. And take it off when you go out: “Empty the diaper genius, take out the trash, clean up the old newspapers, anything,” says Chelsea. And consider outdoor homework, if any. “We had a baby at the NIC for about ten weeks,” he says Heidi. “Our neighbor also had his own grass service to make our grass. It was really nice to know that there was less to worry about at home. “

8. Listen to the story of his birth. “Give her time to share her story in her own way,” he says Sara. “Don’t compare your story to his. Don’t give in to her gaps. Just be there. Help him process the magnitude of what just happened. “

9. Play with the older child, if available. “When my daughter was born, the kindest thing our friends did was take our energetic three-year-old to the playground,” says Aly. “Being alone with the kids was completely reassuring! And if you don’t know the main child well, entertaining them with toys for an hour is as good as gold in their room.”

10. Finally, continue billing for the first few months (or years). “Our friends and family were very generous in the early days, but when I get tired here, sitting without filling my eyes and showering, with a child of almost two months and a year and a half, I want to get help in these later days,” he says. Cassie. “Did anyone bring us dinner tomorrow? Or come to the baby while I clean the bedroom? Or take our child to the park? This does not mean that help is not appreciated in the early days, but rather that it is nice to remember that sometimes you have to adjust to remembering ‘when it seems’ and that you don’t need an unexpected meal or visit. ”

What would you add? If you have a child, what helped them in those early days? Congratulations to new parents or future parents, as well as hard work and recognition from those who are trying, wanting and waiting. xoxo
