A Supreme Court has dropped two charges against Hopewell Chin’ono, but the journalist has yet to stand trial for a tweet.

Zimbabwean court has dismissed case against investigative journalist and government critic Hopewell Chin’ono on charges of inciting public violence last year in support of banned demonstrations on Twitter.

The award-winning journalist has been jailed three times and spent two months in jail since he first came out in support of anti-government protests since his first arrest and impeachment.

The two tweets were taken to jail in November and January for allegedly obstructing justice and publishing false information.

A Harare capital high court dismissed the first complaint on Monday because of a lack of detail on the charge sheet.

“The obvious contradiction between the indictment and the state scheme speeds up the indictment and turns it into nullity,” Judge Siyabona Musithu ruled.

The same court stopped Chin’ono from publishing false information in April.

“It means that my arrest and my case definitely failed as I argued!” Chin’ono tweeted after the verdict.

“I spent the last 15 months in prison and in court for something I didn’t do! It was cruel and tragic!”

Chin’ono has yet to stand trial on charges of obstruction of public justice for posting a tweet before a court ruling in November last year.

He has been released on bail and has been banned from using his Twitter account to post anything that would lead the public to revolt against the government.
