Here are three novels I recently loved, plus the next book on my list …
Matrix Author: Lauren Groff (September 2021)
I finally got this best-seller – about an orphaned teenager who was thrown out of the royal court and in charge of a dark, cold, muddy abbey in England – after readers started commenting in the comments section. “I don’t know how to recommend the Matrix,” he wrote Kate. “A man doesn’t say a single line, he represents the most beautiful loves and friendships of women, and women are amazing. I read it almost in one seat; now it’s tattooed on my soul. ‘ The premise seems compelling, but the wild and poetic novel is a surprisingly funny page-turner.
Shuggie bath Author: Douglas Stuart (October 2020)
Many friends swallowed this Booker Prize-winning novel last year, but I was worried that the issues — addiction, infidelity, violence — were too dark for a pandemic winter. However, I have cracked it this year he could not leave. Shuggie is a kind-hearted boy, and his world revolves around his alcoholic mother, Agnes, on the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland, who lives in public housing. The writing is so vivid that you feel standing there while her father sleeps around her taxi driver, her mother sets fire to the curtains and confronts her sexuality (while neighbors say “she has no rights”). What an elegant and painful premiere. When he finished I hugged the book.
Go well Author: Weike Wang (January 2022)
I was lucky enough to get a revised copy of this novel, which is being navigated in a busy hospital by a Chinese-American New York doctor who is a fan of New York, the death of his father, his older brother, his increasingly needy mother, and the death of his father. (in the last two chapters) a global pandemic. The funny protagonist reminded me of some people in my family who don’t always “pick up” social norms but are completely themselves, and that’s why you love them even more. She also discusses her experience as a first-generation daughter of a Chinese parent: “Over the years, I’ve been appointed a telephone receiver and, if it’s rubbish, a polite hanger. Deepen your voice, said my mother, answer yes to your father’s name or mine … I hated all my tasks, of course … even over time, what I hated most was watching my parents harass me, except the obvious. Wang’s first novel – Chemistry – He won eight gazillion prizes, and I won’t be surprised if he does.
And the following: The Boy Kings of Texas Author: Domingo Martinez (July 2012)
I heard this sad memory – about a Mexican-American boy who grew up in a border town in Texas – while listening to it. the author read a chapter on This American Life. On the way, a young Martinez is driving a shotgun in his mother’s car while his father tries to cross the border with a marijuana truck. His writing is hilarious, frank, and enlightening, and I can’t wait to read the whole book.
