England’s Root has its Ashes century in Melbourne

England captain Joe Root has backed himself to get the first Ashes in Australia as he prepares for the third round of Boxing Day in Melbourne, a mandatory match for England to claim the series.

Root has broken the record for the English 1,630 test in 2021 and so far the Ashes series has two and a half centuries in 89 Brisbane and 62 in Adelaide, as his team has suffered two major defeats.

Australian Marnus Labuschagne has also been seen taking the lead in the world after the second Test.

“I feel in a very good place with my bat,” Root said Sky Sports. “I feel confident that in the next three games I will be able to pull off a hundred in these conditions.

“I know it’s bold to say that, but this year my conversion rate hasn’t been an issue at all.

“I understand how I want to get to my races. Clearly there, I have to keep putting myself in those positions, to have a little bit between my teeth.”

Root has yet to reach a century in Australia, where he is under 40 years old, well below the overall test average of 50.01. Down Under is the highest score of 89 in this series.

But he also expects the team to respond in the Boxing Day (December 26) test, the start of three games to be won.

“There’s a lot of motivation for the team, and we’re doing everything we can to make it 2-1 by the time we get out of here,” Root said.

“If we do it the way we can, we will put (Australia) in an awkward position, we will push it back, and we will find ourselves in a very different situation when we get out of this land.”
