The UK has confirmed 129,471 new COVID-19 cases, and Portugal also reports infection records despite a high vaccination rate.

The UK has registered 129,471 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours and 18 had a positive death test in 28 days, as the Omicron coronavirus variant has risen across Europe.

The previous record for daily infections was 122,186 on December 24th.

Portugal also registered daily coronavirus cases on Tuesday, despite one of the highest vaccine rates in the world. Health authorities recorded 17,172 new infections in the last 24 hours, surpassing the previous record of 16,432 set on January 28th.

Meanwhile, Belgian theaters and other cultural venues won an initial legal victory on Tuesday to reopen after the government ordered it to close within the framework of coronavirus restrictions to curb the rise in Omicron variant cases.

Here are the latest updates:

Reports from the UK report large cases of COVID-19 on a daily basis

The United Kingdom has reported 129,471 new cases of COVID-19, a day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would not impose any new restrictions to limit the spread of the virus a day later.

The figures do not include figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland due to differences in Christmas holiday reporting practices.

The 12,378 reported cases in Wales typically included data that would have been reported in previous days.

The previous record for daily infections was 122,186 on December 24th.

The government said there were 18 new deaths in 28 days of the positive COVID-19 test – well below the latest trend of more than 100 a day.

A Belgian court has suspended the closure of leisure centers

A Belgian court has suspended the closure of concert halls, cinemas and other entertainment venues, a measure announced by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo last week to halt Omicron’s deployment.

Authorities have failed to demonstrate “what are the ways in which recreational areas are particularly dangerous [people’s] health … because they would spread coronaviruses to the extent necessary to order the closure, “said the Council of State, Belgium’s highest administrative court.

Portugal has registered COVID cases

Portugal has reported a record number of daily coronavirus cases, despite being one of the highest vaccine rates in the world, as the Omicron variant is on the rise across Europe.

Health authorities recorded 17,172 new infections in the last 24 hours on Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of 16,432 in the southern European nation on 28 January, the first time the variant was identified in the UK.

Nearly 90 out of the Portuguese population have been vaccinated and almost 2.4 million people have received a third “booster” jab. The United Arab Emirates is the only country with a higher proportion of people vaccinated.
