NHK says 27 people have died after a fire broke out in a building west of Osaka.

Dozens of people are believed to have died after a fire in a building in western Japan, according to NHK.

The fire broke out on the fourth or fifth floor of an eight-story building in a commercial and leisure center in the city of Osaka on Friday, NHK said.

Twenty-eight people were believed to have been harmed, 27 of whom were found to be in a state of heart and lung failure, NHK reported.

The fire was extinguished but the cause of the fire and other details were not immediately known.
