Australian Open men’s final: Novak Djokovic wins Daniil Medvedev’s ninth title in Melbourne

Novak Djokovic continues to establish his case as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and was the ninth career champion in the Australian Open to win his ninth career title in Melbourne 7-6, 6-2, 6- beating Daniil Medvedev in 2021 in the final. The dominance of the first major of the year has been comparable to what we have seen in Rafael Nadal at the French Open (12 titles) and Roger Federer at Wimbledon (eight titles) in the last two decades. This victory is the second time Djokovic has won three consecutive championships at the Australian Open.

The 33-year-old Serb has entered the tournament for the sixth time in the No. 1 standings, and is now 42-0 at Melbourne in first place and has won the title six times.

Djokovic and Medvedev played what they played in the first set of the round, after Djokovic jumped on the back of a 3-0 lead until Medvedev got a break and went 3-3. They exchanged backs until Djokovic got a 6-5 break to get the first set. In the second set, Djokovic got a break to go up 3-1 and from there took full control of the match.

Medvedev is now 0-2 in the Grand Slam finals after losing this match and the 2019 US Open final against Rafael Nadal. Medvedev won three of the last four meetings with Djokovic before leaving this match. While unbeaten on the biggest tennis stages, the world’s 4th-ranked player had nine career ATP individual titles and is knocking on the door of the majors. The 25-year-old Russian player looks set to be one of the next stars of the sport as the big three continue to age.

It is the 18th major title for Novak Djokovic and the ninth Australian Open trophy. Winning 18 Grand Slams Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are left behind by two, both of whom are 20, as the top three men’s tennis players remain in the Grand Slams. Since Federer won Wimbledon in 2003, the team has won 58 of the 70 Grand Slam tournaments played, and only seven other players have won at least one. In contrast, 27 women have won Grand Slams in that stretch.

Djokovic was called “King of Melbourne Park” in the aftermath of the match, and will be looking for Grand Slam number 19 – and Daniil Medvedev will be looking for Grand Slam number – both of you will try ‘Clay of King’, Rafael Nadal at the next French Open in Paris , beginning May 17th.
