Dilip Kumar, one of India’s most famous film actors, has died in the western city of Mumbai, his family said. He was 98 years old.

“With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, I announce the death of our beloved Dilip Saab a few minutes ago,” Faisal Farooqui posted on Kumar’s official Twitter account on Wednesday.

The veteran actor saves his wife Saira Banu, a former Bollywood actor.

Kumar has starred in some of India’s most successful and successful films including Mughal-e-Azam, Devdas, Naya Daur, Ram Aur Shyam and Madhumati.

Actor Mohammad Yusuf Khan was born on December 11, 1922, in the Pakistani city of Peshawar. His screen name was suggested by Devika Rani, who in 1944 cast Jwar Bhata in his first film.

Starting as a Kumar fruit seller, Kumar fought against early failure and family condemnation to become one of Bollywood’s most famous and respected film stars.

The nickname “King of Tragedy” with his good looks, tangled hair and deep voice, had a career spanning more than 50 years and nearly 60 films.

But he lost international fame after being denied the opportunity to play Sherif Ali in David Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia. The part was for an Egyptian actor Omar Sharif.
