Boxing results, takeaways: Gervonta Davis sees his star shine more, Vasiliy Lomachenko on his way again

[ad_1]
A couple of great performances sparked excitement in the boxing world on Saturday night Gervonta “Tank” Davis stopped Mario Barrios and Vasiliy Lomachenko returned to form With the elimination of Masayoshi Nakatani.
Davis caught a third-place championship, climbed 140 pounds against the much taller Barrios and led his strong mark to a light division in front of a wild crowd in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Lomachenko may have secured a rematch with Teofimo Lopez in three of the four lightweight world championships.
These are nights that allow a lot of talk for boxing fans. Let’s take a look at the top three recipes that come out of the night.
The tank star continues to rise
You can question Davis ’claim to being a true three-time world champion because his light weight and now junior welterweight were technically secondary championships within the WBA. That’s the boxing problem, not the Davis problem. The sure thing is that Davis is emerging as a sports star. While Ryan Garcia follows social media and Teofimo Lopez gets the biggest victory for young lightweight fighters, Davis is the biggest man boxing star.
In Barrios, Davis had the right dance partner to shine more than in other big moments, including the 2020 Elimination Round against Leo Santa Cruz. Davis gave up and Barrios suffered some terrifying blows, as well as falling twice in the eighth and then in the 11th round. Fans tune in to see a great tuner and tend to respect fighters who are willing to test themselves, taking risks like jumping weight beyond what can be smart. Davis brought power with him and gave it a dramatic, raising the star in the process. Barrios ’shares probably went up, even though he suffered the first failure of his youthful career.
Lomachenko got his rematch from Lopez … probably
After mastering Nakatani well, attention immediately returned to whether Lomachenko would succeed in restarting with Teofimo Lopez. Lopez upset Lomachenko last October for leaving the ring with three world-recognized lightweight titles and Lomachenko has since claimed he should have a fight tie and blamed the injured shoulder (he was operated on after the fight). he had his first doubt in the fight. Meanwhile, Lopez and his camp have repeatedly said they were not interested in a rematch, as Lomachenko himself did not want a clause to reclaim his contract for the first fight. Lopez solved his problems with the Top Rank recently and being in the same camp as Lomachenko makes revenge the easiest fight for every man. Top Rank Bob Arum said he thought the restart made sense and that it would be a big draw for pay-per-view.
After Lomachenko won, Teofimo Lopez Sr. said he would give his son revenge for the next fight between the two men, after Lopez defended his mandatory title in August against George Kambosos. Lomachenko said he was ready to do it in late 2021 or early 2022 and Arum said he would carry out the fight by getting the two men properly compensated. Of course, boxing has a unique way of getting its way and Lopez has flirted with the idea of other opponents or a 140-pound jump. Even if there is to be a slight stumbling block at the negotiating table, it’s not hard not to see the relay unfold.

The future of boxing remains clear
We’re not far behind on another statement that Floyd Mayweather’s retirement and Manny Pacquiao’s declining boxing had on his deathbed. There were no young stars, they didn’t want to be seen by the fans and nothing sparked interest in the sport. But, as boxing always does, it’s reloaded with exciting fighters (especially light weight and weightlifting), title mergers, and plenty of potentially interesting games that move you back and forth with the needle.
That doesn’t mean boxing doesn’t have its share of problems. The match is often too political yet and the title photo is much more confusing to get the sport to where it needs to be. But the thrilling performances of men like Lomachenko and Davis and the richness of the wonderful fights they both have available is another reminder that boxing is on the rise, even if it will never reach its peak.
