TEL AVIV (Reuters) – An Israeli couple has been released on a trip to Istanbul to take pictures of President Tayyip Erdogan’s residence on charges of espionage, Israel’s prime minister and foreign minister said on Thursday.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has denied espionage charges against the couple Mordi and Natali Oknin, saying they do not work for the Israeli agency. His government sent a chief envoy to Turkey to help work to free them.
“After the joint effort with Turkey, Mordi and Natali Oknin have been released from prison and are on their way home to Israel,” Foreign Minister Bennett and Yair Lapid said in a joint statement.
“We thank the Turkish president and his government for their cooperation and look forward to welcoming the couple home,” they said.
A Turkish court arrested the Israeli couple on November 12 on charges of espionage for taking photographs of the Camlica Tower, Istanbul’s telecommunications tower, at Erdogan’s headquarters, which the observatory has reported, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.
Anadolu said an employee alerted police after seeing the couple taking pictures of the residence from the tower restaurant.
He said a Turkish citizen who was with the couple was also arrested on charges of political and military espionage.
