Shui was the favorite for the role because he was previously in charge of the United Team, which consisted of senior international players, at the Chinese National Games in September. The 54-year-old, who won a silver medal with China at the 1996 Olympics, is the first Chinese woman to coach the team.
In the Group A of the Asian Women’s Cup, which starts on January 20, China will face host India and Chinese Taipei and Iran.
The Chinese have won the title nine times, but have not won it since 2006. China finished third at the last Asian Women’s Cup in Jordan in 2018.
